From “The Thick of It” to Hope: A Student’s DBT Success Story in Song
Sometimes, the Most Powerful DBT Success Stories Don’t Come in Words, They Come in Music
When you’re searching for DBT success stories, you’re not just casually browsing the internet. You’re looking for proof. Proof that the pain you’re feeling right now won’t last forever. Proof that these skills everyone keeps talking about actually work. Proof that somewhere, someone who felt exactly like you do right now made it to the other side.
Today, I have something special to share with you. Something that made me cry happy tears and reminded me exactly why I do this work.
A student wrote a song.
Not just any song, a song directly inspired by her journey through DBT skills classes here at DBT Path. And when she sent it to me, she said I could share it with the world.
So here we are. Together. And I think you need to hear this.
When Your Words Come Back to You as Music
There’s a moment in teaching that you can’t predict or plan for. It’s the moment when you realize that something you said, maybe something you’ve said a hundred times, actually landed. It took root. It grew into something bigger than you ever imagined.
That’s what happened when I received this song.

I’ve taught the concept of holding onto hope “in the thick of it” more times than I can count. It’s one of those phrases that comes up again and again in our DBT skills classes, because the thick of it is where most of us live. It’s that suffocating middle space where you can’t see the beginning or the end, just the overwhelming now.
And this student? She took that concept and turned it into an anthem. Her very own DBT success story expressed into the world!

The Lyrics That Made Me Cry
There’s a section in this song that stopped me in my tracks. The student sings about having hope in the thick of it, even when you can’t cope, even when it’s just a little bit, and finding your way to the heart of it.
Read that again.
This isn’t toxic positivity. This isn’t “just think happy thoughts.” This is the raw, real, hard truth of what it means to practice DBT skills when everything in your body is screaming to give up.
It’s about radical acceptance meeting distress tolerance. It’s about acknowledging that you’re struggling AND choosing to keep going anyway. It’s about finding even a tiny glimmer of hope and holding onto it like your life depends on it, because sometimes, it does.
When I talk about healing emotions when you feel like you don’t have skin, this is what I’m talking about. This song IS the journey.

Why This Is One of the Most Beautiful DBT Success Stories I’ve Ever Seen
Let me be honest with you: DBT success stories don’t always look the way you’d expect.
Sometimes success looks like finally being able to sit with an emotion without spiraling. Sometimes it looks like sending a text you’re proud of instead of one you’ll regret. Sometimes it looks like getting through a Tuesday without self-destructing.
And sometimes? Sometimes it looks like creating art.
This student didn’t just learn skills, she internalized them. She made them part of her story, her voice, her creative expression. She took the hardest moments of her life and transformed them into something that could help someone else feel less alone.
That’s not just success. That’s transformation.
What This Means for You (Yes, YOU)
I know why you’re here.
Maybe you’ve been wondering if DBT classes are really worth it. Maybe you’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t stick. Maybe you feel like you’re “not sick enough” to deserve help, or “too far gone” to be helped.
I hear those voices too. And I want you to know: they’re lying to you.
This song exists because a real person, someone who struggled just like you, decided to try something different. She showed up. She learned the skills. She practiced them imperfectly, over and over again. And slowly, something shifted.
The “thick of it” didn’t disappear. Life didn’t suddenly become easy. But she found her way to the heart of it. She found hope. She found her DBT success story.
And if she can do it, so can you.

A Note from Debbie
I need to take a moment here to speak directly to you, human to human.
When I received this song, I sat at my desk and sobbed. Not sad tears, grateful tears. Proud tears. The kind of tears that come when you remember why you started doing something in the first place.
Teaching DBT skills isn’t just my job. It’s my calling. And moments like this, when a student’s growth comes back to me in the form of a literal song, remind me that this work matters. That showing up, class after class, really does make a difference.
To my student who wrote this: Thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your journey. Thank you for being brave enough to share your art. Thank you for giving hope to everyone who hears this song and thinks, “Maybe that could be me someday.”
Because it can be. It really, truly can.
Ready to Start Your Own DBT Success Story?
Here’s the thing about DBT success stories: they all start somewhere.
They start with a moment of “I can’t keep living like this.” They start with a Google search at 2 AM. They start with a tiny, terrified decision to try something new.
Maybe this is your moment.
If you’re ready to learn the skills that can take you from “the thick of it” to hope, I’d love to have you in class. Our DBT skills training is designed for people who feel too much, react too fast, and are exhausted from fighting their own emotions every single day.

Your Song Is Still Being Written
I don’t know what your DBT success story will look like. Maybe it’ll be a song. Maybe it’ll be a journal entry. Maybe it’ll be a quiet Tuesday where you finally feel okay being you.
Whatever it looks like, I believe it’s possible. I believe you’re possible.
And when you’re in the thick of it: when you can’t cope, when hope feels impossibly far away: I want you to remember this song. Remember that someone else was exactly where you are. And she made it through.
You can too. 💙
You deserve a place that can hold your story
