What Is Wise Mind in DBT? How to Balance Emotion and Logic

Wise Mind is the DBT state of mind where your reasonable mind and your emotion mind come together, the calm, centered place where you know what is true and right for you. It is the balance point between cool logic and hot emotion, and in DBT it is treated as a kind of inner wisdom anyone can access. At DBT Path, the original online DBT skills class taught since 2013, learning to find Wise Mind is one of the first mindfulness skills students practice, because nearly every other skill works better from this steady place.

DBT describes three states of mind. Understanding all three is the key to recognizing Wise Mind when you are in it.

Reasonable Mind

Reasonable mind is your logical, factual, problem-solving side. It is helpful for planning, analyzing, and following steps. On its own, though, it can feel cool and disconnected from what actually matters to you.

Emotion Mind

Emotion mind is when your feelings are in charge. It can be passionate and motivating, but when emotion mind runs the show, facts get distorted and choices are driven by how you feel in the moment rather than by what is true.

Wise Mind

Wise Mind is the overlap of the two, where reason and emotion are both honored. From this settled place you can feel your feelings fully and still see clearly. It often shows up as a quiet, settled sense of knowing, a calm “yes, this is right” rather than a loud argument in your head.

How to Access Your Wise Mind

Wise Mind is not something you force, it is something you settle into. A few DBT practices make it easier:

Breath practice: breathe slowly and, on each in-breath, silently say “wise,” and on each out-breath say “mind.” Let your attention drop out of your head and into your center.

Stone flake on the lake: imagine you are a small flake of stone drifting down through calm, clear water, settling gently to the bottom. The still center you reach is Wise Mind.

Ask and listen: ask yourself a question, then stay quiet and notice the answer that rises from your settled center rather than the first reactive thought. Wise Mind answers tend to be calm, not urgent.

When to Use Wise Mind

Turn to Wise Mind before an important decision, in the middle of a strong emotion, or any time you feel torn between what you think and what you feel. Checking in with Wise Mind helps you respond in line with your values rather than your impulses. Many DBT Path students describe it as the home base they return to again and again.

How DBT Path Teaches Wise Mind

At DBT Path, Wise Mind is taught as part of the Mindfulness module, the foundation of all four DBT skill areas in our online classes. DBT Path is the original online DBT skills class, delivered live online since 2013 in a private, lecture-style format with no pressure to share.
